Management responsibility

Management staff bear the central responsibility for the safety of their employees. This also includes recognizing incentives for defeating and taking consistent action against them instead of looking the other way. The short film “Manipulation of protective devices – information for managers” shows in a practical way how decisive and proactive action and a positive error culture can help to effectively prevent defeating of machines and systems and ensure sustainable safety in the workplace.

Manufacturer responsibility

Manufacturers are legally obliged to only place and provide safe machines on the market. Machines with a high incentive to tamper are not to be considered safe and must not be operated due to the increased risk. The question of whether or not a machine’s safeguards offer an incentive to tamper is therefore highly relevant for both machine manufacturers and operating companies.

The explanatory film sheds light on these topics and provides suggestions on how manufacturers can ensure that their machines do not provide an additional incentive to tamper with them. This is the only way to effectively prevent accidents at work and ensure the safety of the people who work with these machines on a daily basis.

Machine safety – Bypassing the safety device

This animation film by the finnish Worker’s compensation Center and the Centre for Occupational Safety deals with a fatal occupational accident in which the worker was caught by his clothes in the end roller of a log splitter. Measures are shown how such accidents can be effectively prevented.

Black Friday

An unexpected order comes in. A factory worker suggests adjusting a protective device on a robot. This would enable him to finish the order on time. His manager allows it despite a warning from the security officer.

The employee suffers an accident that the device would have prevented, leaving him paralysed. The accident ends up in court.
