New Edition: the manufacturer of machinery is committed by EN ISO 14119 to take measures against defeating of safeguards

The international standard EN ISO 14119 “Safety of machinery – Interlocking devices associated with guards” is aimed at the manufacturer of machinery and contains requirements relating to the monitoring of the position of safety doors, protective covers, etc. When the safeguard is opened it leads usually to a standstill of dangerous movements or further operation is only possible with reduced speed and in a hold-to-run-mode. However, if the operator will be hindered from carrying out his work, e.g. due to the need of frequently open a safeguard, the motivation to defeat a safeguard is provided. The current edition of EN ISO 14119 therefor requires to determine the motivation to defeat interlocking devices and when indicated to upgrading both the usability and safety concept of the machinery.

The German Social Accidents Insurance (DGUV) has issued a new information on prevent defeating by using appropriate modes of operation and ensuring sufficient overview over the process.

Premium relevant aspects: Measures against defeating of safeguards

The new premium payment procedure of the Berufsgenossenschaft for foodstuff and catering industry (BGN, Germany) has started at the beginning of the year 2014.
In future, exemplary occupational safety should be more worthwhile for the BGN member enterprises. This includes also the measures of prevention of defeating of safeguards.
In order to get a premium, the related enterprise has to meet most of the measures described in several sector specific questionaires. Every realized measure makes points. The BGN will pay a 25 € premium per employee if 80 % of the maximum number of points are reached. (Employee= full time employee with 1600 working hours/year). An amount to a maximum of 100 000 € will be paid.
